The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) will issue a silver collector coin on January 26 to mark the 125th anniversary of electric trams in Bulgaria, according to a statement published on the central bank’s website.

This will be Bulgaria’s first commemorative coin since the country transitioned from the lev to the euro. Under EU rules, collector coins are legal tender only in the issuing country and must have a different face value to euro coins in general circulation. They must also differ significantly from standard circulation coins in at least two of the following three characteristics: colour, diameter, and weight.

The “125 Years of Electric Trams in Bulgaria” coin has a face value of €10 and will be priced at €144 upon release. It will be sold through four BNB cash desks in Sofia.
