After nine years in office, Bulgaria’s president Rumen Radev has left the presidential building. He was seen off at the main entrance by Vice President Iliana Iotova, who took over as president following the Constitutional Court’s ruling that ended Radev’s term early. Citizens and journalists gathered outside to greet Radev.
Iliana Iotova becomes Bulgaria’s first female president
‘I am grateful that nine years ago the Bulgarian people entrusted me with this responsibility, and that their support has continued. Today is my first day as a citizen, standing alongside all Bulgarians, believing that together we can change Bulgaria, defend democracy, uphold the law and boost the economy. The wave cannot be stopped because we are many,” he told reporters, declining to comment on any potential involvement in the upcoming parliamentary elections. He later engaged directly with citizens outside the building.
As president, Iotova will now consult with potential candidates for caretaker prime minister and set the date for the next elections.
