Bulgaria cannot afford to allow its budget deficit to rise, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, warned in an interview with public service broadcaster BNT, calling on both caretaker and regular governments to exercise caution in their fiscal policy.

According to Kristalina Georgieva, the country’s economy is developing well despite the political crisis, and Bulgaria is already benefiting from the introduction of the euro.

She added that it is still too early to say what the level of inflation will be—an issue of concern for all Bulgarians. According to her, this will become clearer in a few months. In her words, in other countries that have joined the eurozone, the one-off inflation ranged between 0.1% and 0.3%.
