Italy will finance the temporary infrastructure for the construction of the Kabyle military area, intended to host a NATO multinational battlegroup, Bulgaria’s parliamentary defence committee has approved.
The committee backed an agreement with Italy covering new military facilities in the area, according to local media.
Construction will take place in two phases, initially for temporary deployment and later for the permanent stationing of the battlegroup.
Bulgaria will also be required to invest in the project, though no specific figures were disclosed.
Once completed, the new military area will be able to accommodate more than 3,000 personnel if needed, strengthening the protection of NATO’s eastern flank.
The agreement with Italy must still be approved by Bulgaria’s parliament.
