At a second and final reading, parliament voted to shut down Bulgaria’s Anti-Corruption Commission through amendments to the Audit Office Act.

The Anti-Corruption Act and the commission it established were adopted by the National Assembly on 21 September 2023. By 2025, almost all parties represented in parliament were calling for the commission’s abolition.

The commission’s archive will be transferred to the State Agency for National Security. Powers to uncover and investigate corruption will be taken over by the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and the National Investigative Service. Responsibility for prevention, as well as asset and conflict-of-interest declarations, will be transferred to the Audit Office.

The bill was introduced by GERB and supported by MPs from DPS – New Beginning, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), and There Is Such a People (ITN).
