The number of foreign students in Bulgaria continues to rise, according to data from the draft National Map of Higher Education for 2025, cited by the newspaper Sega. In the last academic year, 16,532 foreign students studied in the country, accounting for 8.67% of all students. At the same time, around 20,000 Bulgarians were studying abroad.

Foreign students in Bulgaria have more than doubled for 10 years

Foreign students in Bulgaria come from more than 120 countries, but nearly 90% are from Europe, and about half are citizens of Greece, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Nearly 60% of all foreign students in the country are enrolled in just two fields - medicine and dental medicine. More than 10% of foreign students are studying in areas such as tourism, transport, music and dance arts, and the theory and management of education, BGNES reports.
