President Iliana Iotova concluded her consultations on the appointment of an interim prime minister today, meeting with Dimitar Glavchev, the chairman of the Court of Auditors, and the deputy chairpersons, Margarita Nikolova and Silvia Kadreva.
'I am accustomed to fulfilling my constitutional duties,' said Mr Glavchev. 'I have twice as many reasons to decline, having already served as caretaker prime minister on two occasions. However, this is a personal matter, and the Constitution does not make provision for it. I said that I am open to accepting the appointment, but the final decision rests with the president."
'I will fulfil my constitutional duties,' Margarita Nikolova told reporters after her meeting with President Iliana Iotova. In response to a question about whether she could form a government quickly, she said, "I have proven that I can build effective teams, and I do not shy away from difficult decisions."
Silvia Kadreva also expressed her willingness, stating that she does not shirk her constitutional responsibilities, but emphasising that forming a cabinet would be challenging.
According to the Constitution, the acting prime minister can be chosen from the chair or deputy chair of the National Assembly, the governor or deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, the chair or deputy chair of the Court of Auditors, or the ombudsman or deputy ombudsman. The potential candidates — Deputy Governor of the BNB Andrey Gyurov, Deputy Ombudsman Maria Filipova, Court of Auditors Chair Dimitar Glavchev, and Deputy Chairs Margarita Nikolova and Silvia Kadreva — have all expressed their readiness to take up the post.
Following these consultations, President Iotova must decide whom to mandate to form a caretaker government. The date of the early parliamentary elections also depends on the signing of the decree, as they must be held within two months of the appointment.
