Trifon Zarezan is widely celebrated across Bulgaria as the day when wine growers ritually prune their vines to ensure a fruitful year ahead. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the two-day festival held in the mountain village of Delchevo, nestled in the Pirin Mountains of south-western Bulgaria. The event honours local tradition and crowns the best producers of homemade wine and rakia, Bulgaria’s grape brandy.
Wine and rakia tastings from the competition entries will take place on 31 January, followed by the announcement of the winners in each category.
On Trifon Zarezan Day, observed on 1 February under the Old Style calendar, celebrations will move to the Bayira area, where the traditional pruning of the vines will be performed. The festivities will then continue in Delchevo’s main square with a musical programme, horo dancing, and the serving of white and red wine in honour of the holiday.
Special guests will include amateur performers from Delchevo and the nearby villages of Mosomishte, Banichan, Breznitsa and Goleshovo, as well as visiting performers from Ksiropotamos in Greece.
