Bulgaria will submit
application forms for the inscription of the Rose Valley on the UNESCO
Intangible Cultural Heritage List and for its registration in the Globally Important
Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This
was announced during a discussion between representatives of state and local
authorities, rose growers, and processors, held in the town of Kazanlak.
The initiative is a joint effort of the Bulgarian National Association
Essential Oils, Perfumery and Cosmetics, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food,
and the Municipality of Kazanlak.
The Mayor of Kazanlak, Galina Stoyanova, expressed hope that the initiative
would establish rose production as a national value, and emphasized that Bulgaria
is globally recognized for the oil-bearing rose and the Rose Festival, but that
more active institutional efforts
are needed to reinforce this tradition as a livelihood and culture.
