Bulgaria’s outgoing government has authorised the Kozloduy nuclear power plant to import Russian iron and steel products, the Council of Ministers said.
In a statement, the government’s press office said the decision was taken under a national derogation from EU restrictive measures imposed in response to Russia’s actions destabilising Ukraine. The move was reported by Marta Mladenova.
“Ensuring the highest levels of technical and nuclear safety, radiation protection, safe and healthy working conditions, as well as environmental protection, remains the primary priority in the operation of Kozloduy NPP,” the statement added.
The plant generates more than one-third of Bulgaria’s electricity.
Russia has designated Bulgaria an “unfriendly state”, while restrictions on trade with Moscow are intended to curb revenues used by the Kremlin to finance its war against Ukraine.
