There is no risk of pollution to the Bulgarian section of the Danube River from the partially sunken barge near Giurgiu, said the regional governor of Ruse, Dragomir Draganov. He assured that the situation is being closely monitored and that, should a potential risk arise, a crisis headquarters will be formed to take additional measures.
Earlier today, Romania’s National Administration “Romanian Waters” reported that oil pollution had been registered on Wednesday in the Danube in the area of Giurgiu’s Old Beach following the partial sinking of a barge that had no crew on board. Local authorities intervened promptly to contain the pollution, which for now is confined to the port area only. After the incident, an oil film appeared on the water’s surface, but no fuel odor was detected.
Meanwhile, the General Directorate “Emergency Rescue Activities” of the Maritime Administration has dispatched teams to the area around river kilometer 490 and further downstream along the Danube. Monitoring is also being carried out via drone in the Bulgarian waters of the river.
