Krum Zarkov is the new leader of BSP. He was elected at a session of the 51st party congress on Saturday. He replaced the previous leader Atanas Zafirov, who left the position, stating that his decision was dictated by the desire not to deepen internal divisions and to provide an opportunity for a new beginning in the party. Over the years, the seats won by the BSP and its coalitions in parliament have varied from 82 in the 240-member parliament in 2005 to 19 currently.
"The direction of the BSP will be in the fight against the conquered state, in creating a legal order and ensuring a high-quality life in this country," the new leader announced.
44-year-old Zarkov is a lawyer who graduated from the French High School in Sofia and then from "International Law" at the Sorbonne in Paris. He is a former acting Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Galab Donev, and before that a BSP MP in four parliaments.
Zarkov was Secretary for Legal Affairs under President Rumen Radev, from where he resigned after expressing disagreement with the initiative to propose holding a referendum on the date of the introduction of the euro in the country.
