The 34th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition has been hit by the strongest storm since its beginning in mid-November 2025. The speed of the wind gusts is over 150 km/h. The buildings of the Bulgarian Antarctic base “St. Kliment Ohridski” are vibrating and it is dangerous to move between them, reported BTA.

The research vessel “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” has taken shelter from the waves and the wind in the bay in front of the Spanish Antarctic base “Juan Carlos I” and at the moment it is impossible to launch boats to shore. Scientists and logisticians from the expedition were supposed to go ashore from the ship, but their transportation has been postponed. The storm is expected to continue at least in the next 24 hours.

The Bulgarian research ship “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” sailed for Livingston Island on November 7 from Varna and crossed the Atlantic to arrive in the region in mid-December.
