The process of withdrawing the Bulgarian lev from circulation and introducing euro banknotes and coins is proceeding smoothly - even better than initially expected. This was stated by Vladimir Ivanov, Chair of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets and Head of the Coordination Center under the Euro Mechanism.
As of 1 February 2026, the euro is the sole legal currency in Bulgaria. Nevertheless, dual price display remains in force until 8 August, he noted.
According to the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), the experience of EU member states that most recently adopted the euro shows that the obligation for dual price display has helped prevent price increases, by allowing consumers to easily identify traders and other businesses that have unlawfully raised prices.
