Until Bulgaria’s accession to the Peace Council, established by U.S. President Donald Trump, is ratified, the country can only hold a “consultative vote.” This became clear today after the outgoing government published the accession decision, signed by outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, who, together with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, was the only representative of an EU country to participate in Trump’s initiative.

Brussels expressed “serious doubts” just hours after the announcement.

According to the Bulgarian Constitution and given the nature of the decision, it requires ratification by the National Assembly and has no legal effect until it is voted on. The outgoing cabinet stated that it is leaving the ratification to the next National Assembly.
