President Iliana Iotova has nominated Andrey Gyurov, deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, as a candidate for caretaker prime minister, the presidency said. She is due to task him with forming a caretaker government on 12 February at 10am local time (8am GMT).
Gyurov is a Bulgarian politician from the We Continue the Change party and a finance expert. He has served as a member of parliament in several legislatures and as chair of the party’s parliamentary group. He supports a pro-European line in Bulgarian politics. During consultations with the president, opposition parties put his name forward as a potential caretaker prime minister.
Gyurov was elected deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank in 2023. However, in June 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission found an incompatibility arising from his simultaneous roles in a political party and a commercial association. He has been suspended from the post, but not dismissed, as he is appealing against the commission’s findings in the Supreme Administrative Court. He remains on the list of office holders who are eligible to be appointed caretaker prime minister under the Constitution.
