According to a European Commission report presented today, road deaths in Bulgaria, Romania and Greece remain well above the EU average, highlighting the need for further action in these countries, BTA reports.
Although Bulgaria's road mortality figures are high, the country is one of seven member states that are on track to achieve the target of reducing road accidents by 50% by 2030.
"Since the baseline year of 2019, road deaths have decreased by 12% EU-wide, but this improvement masks considerable differences among member states," the EC report reads. 'Only a handful of member states — Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Slovenia — are currently on track to meet the 50% reduction target for 2030.'
While the EU average was 45 deaths per million people in road accidents last year, Bulgaria recorded 74. In 2019, when the EU average was 51, Bulgaria's mortality rate was around 90 per million people.
