The British Ambassador to Bulgaria, Nathaniel Copsey, visited the Kalotina border crossing with Serbia alongside the outgoing Interior Minister, Daniel Mitov. The border police said that the diplomat was briefed on the practical application of the EU entry/exit system at the external land border.
They demonstrated how third-country nationals are registered in the system during border control upon initial entry into the EU. During the summer, when passenger traffic is particularly intense, all workstations at the crossing point will be operational.
Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, head of the Border Police, informed the ambassador that illegal migration had decreased by 70% over the past year. He pointed out that compensatory measures and enhanced cooperation at internal borders have strengthened the fight against organised criminal groups involved in human trafficking and other types of illegal cross-border activity.
