The Acting Minister of Justice, Andrey Yankulov, has called a plenary meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council for today. The only item on the agenda is the appointment of an acting chief prosecutor.
Minister Yankulov quoted the Penal College of the Supreme Court of Cassation as saying that 'after 21 July 2025, Bulgaria has not had a legitimate acting chief prosecutor', and that 'a situation in which the supreme judges do not recognise the chief prosecutor is intolerable in a state governed by the rule of law'. 'This delegitimises and undermines public confidence not only in this institution, but also in the justice system in Bulgaria,' noted the Minister of Justice.
Borislav Sarafov has been filling the position on an interim basis since the dismissal of incumbent Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev in 2023.
