Bulgaria is nearing completion of key stages in the construction of the Vertical Gas Corridor on its territory. By the end of 2026, two of the planned projects under the initiative are expected to become operational.
The Vertical Gas Corridor aims to link gas infrastructure from southern to northern Europe, enabling the transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) — including supplies from the United States — from Greece to Ukraine and countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
Caretaker Energy Minister Traycho Traykov announced the progress at a ministerial meeting in Washington focused on strengthening the security and diversification of gas supplies in the region.
According to the Energy Ministry, work is currently underway to expand the capacity of key cross-border connection points between Bulgaria and Greece (Kulata/Sidirokastro) and between Romania and Bulgaria (Negru Vodă/Kardam).
In 2027, capacity is also expected to increase at the interconnection points near Stara Zagora in Bulgaria and Komotini in Greece. As well as improving energy security, the upgrades are expected to give gas traders greater flexibility and access to additional markets.
