A large protest in front of the Sofia Courthouse, organized by the
Justice for All Initiative, last night demanded the replacement of
acting prosecutor general Borislav Sarafov. Although the plenary
session of the Supreme Judicial Council is scheduled for today with a
single point - the appointment of a new temporary state prosecutor on
the initiative of the acting Minister of Justice Andrey Yankulov, the
demonstrators think that it can be foiled, BGNES reported.
According to the
protesters, Borislav Sarafov has usurped the position of prosecutor
general and has been in violation of the law since July of last year,
when the six-month period in which he could hold the position
expired.
“Until Sarafov
vacates the office on the fourth floor, the protests will continue
and we will signal the European Prosecutor’s Office for violating
the rule of law,” said lawyer Velislav Velichkov from the
non-governmental organization.
“Justice for All”
also accuses the acting prosecutor general of political dependence
and interference in key cases such as “Petrohan” and “Eight
Dwarfs”.
