For the second year in a row, Olympic, world and European weightlifting champion Karlos Nasar won the “Athlete of the Year” award. Behind him remained young volleyball player Alexander Nikolov and skier Albert Popov.
The
top ten was completed by snowboarder Tervel Zamfirov, car racer
Nikola Tsolov, volleyball player Simeon Nikolov, tennis player Ivan
Ivanov, gymnast Stiliyana Nikolova, track and field athlete Bozhidar
Saraboyukov and basketball player Alexander Vezenkov.
The
national men’s volleyball team, which won the silver medal at the
World Championship in the Philippines, became
Team of the Year. Their coach Gianlorenzo Blengini received
the award for
best coach.
“A
brilliant ceremony, a mixture of happiness, tears and smiles and
wishes for many successes for Bulgarian athletes. In recent years,
they have made us proud and made us believe in Bulgarian sport. They
have made many people all over the world talk about them,” said
President Iliana Iotova
at the ceremony.
