Bulgaria’s National Assembly unanimously approved, at first and second reading, the agreement between Bulgaria and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to bring the Center for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol under the auspices of the world organization.

Under this agreement, the Center for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol, which has been designated as a Category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO, will be responsible for the study and preservation of underwater and world cultural heritage in the Black Sea region and the Lower Danube.

The Center for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol, which was established in 1978, is the oldest institution of its kind in Eastern Europe and represents the first such institution actively working in the Black Sea Basin.
