The war in Ukraine — rather than tensions involving Iran — remains the primary security risk for Bulgaria, Deputy Defence Minister Yordan Bozhilov said in an interview with Nova Television.
“The main risk to Europe is the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine,” he said. 'For that reason, NATO forces are deployed across countries on the alliance’s eastern flank, including Bulgaria.'
He noted that a NATO multinational battlegroup led by Italy is stationed in Bulgaria, and that enhanced vigilance measures are currently in place.
Bozhilov also addressed concerns that the presence of US military transport aircraft could turn Sofia Airport into a potential military target.
“The security services have clearly stated that there is no information indicating an increased risk,” he said. ‘The airport is operating normally. Claims that it has been closed for military purposes are untrue. The temporary closure was related to renovation works.”
