Greece will support Bulgaria in protecting its airspace with air defence systems, fighter jets and personnel, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said, according to the ANA-MPA news agency. The systems and aircraft will be deployed in northern Greece and will cover much of Bulgaria’s territory.

Dendias said the move follows a request from Bulgaria submitted on March 5.

In a decision made by Greece’s Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence, a Patriot missile battery will be deployed to a suitable location in northern Greece in the coming hours. This will provide anti-missile protection for much of Bulgaria’s territory.

Additionally, two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets will be stationed at an air base in northern Greece to provide Bulgaria with additional protection.

Two senior officers from the Greek Air Force will also be sent to Sofia to coordinate with the Bulgarian military command, according to the Bulgarian news agency BTA.

Dendias added that he will visit Sofia next week at the invitation of his Bulgarian counterpart, Atanas Zapryanov.
