Bulgarian territory is not being used - even logistically - to support the operation of the United States in Iran, caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said in an interview with bTV.
Regarding the presence of American aircraft in the country, the minister explained that diplomatic notes sent by the U.S. government specify the purpose of their deployment, how long they will remain, and what tasks they will perform.
PM: Bulgaria is not involved in the actions of Israel and USA against Iran
U.S. planes at Sofia airport cannot carry out strikes, minister says
“There may be up to 15 tanker aircraft, part of the strategic fleet of the United States in Europe used to support NATO operations,” the minister said, adding that the personnel involved number around 350 people.
He also noted that discussions are currently underway with the American side about the possibility of relocating the aircraft from Sofia Airport.
Iran has inquired about the presence of U.S. aircraft in Bulgaria, and the explanation provided was accepted, Zapryanov said.
“From that point on, there are no concerns,” the defence minister added. According to him, by fulfilling its allied commitments and strengthening collective defence and readiness, Bulgaria is not considered a target by the Iranian leadership.
