There are currently 247 emergency shelters across Bulgaria that are suitable for use. Together, they can accommodate up to 60,000 people.
This figure does not include underground car parks, metro stations or other potential shelter locations.
The information was provided to BNR by Commissioner Iliya Georgiev, head of the Preventive Activities Department at the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection. He said the shelters are inspected twice a year, and instructions for their maintenance are issued to the owners. Responsibility for their condition and upkeep lies with the owners — state institutions, municipalities or private entities.
According to data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI), Bulgaria’s population is just under 6.5 million.
