Zlatyu Boyadzhiev's monumental painting, Two Weddings, will be the highlight of a spring auction of works by Bulgarian masters, to be held in Sofia on 26 March.
Estimated at €20,000–€35,000, the painting was purchased directly from the artist by Prof. William James Orville-Thomas. It is appearing on the market for the first time after more than five decades in a private collection.
Created in Paris in 1970, Two Weddings depicts a Christian and a Muslim wedding in a winter landscape featuring a minaret, a church bell tower, and an ancient tree.

The work belongs to the second period of Boyadzhiev’s career, which began after he suffered a severe stroke in 1951 that paralysed his right hand. After several years, he resumed painting with his left hand, which led to a dramatic shift in his style.
Other works to be auctioned include pieces by Ivan Milev, Georges Papazoff, Svetlin Rusev, Dechko Uzunov and Vladimir Dimitrov–The Master.
All 178 lots in the auction are currently on display at Vatev House – Artmark Gallery (1 Kuzman Shapkarev Street, Sofia) and can be viewed daily until the auction. Admission is free.
