Bulgaria plans to purchase 12 new multiple rocket launchers MARS 3. The acquisition will be part of a deal between Germany and Israel, under which 500 multiple rocket launchers will be produced for the needs of the Bundeswehr, with 250 of them allocated for other European countries.
MARS 3, with a range of over 150 km, are being manufactured under license in Germany by KNDS based on the Israeli PULS system, an equivalent to the American HIMARS. Initially, the Bulgarian army wanted to acquire the American systems, but delivery times were considered too long, 24chasa.bg reports. The German-Israeli deal will provide around 500 MARS 3 systems, also known as EuroPULS, according to the German defense publication hartpunkt.
Under the same European framework via Germany, Bulgaria also ordered IRIS-T air defense systems. The financing is being provided through an EU loan under the SAFE mechanism.
