Bulgaria is reinstating full controls on chicken imports from Poland because of the risk of salmonella, Angel Mavrovski, Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, said. He also announced that the freezing date will now be indicated on the labels of thawed meat and meat cuts sold in shops.

Over the past week, inspectors have stepped up checks on the illegal transport of animals, including at the country’s borders. Nearly 1,420 kg of food and 2,850 eggs are to be destroyed because they had passed their expiry date, lacked documentation, or were produced and stored in breach of hygiene and temperature requirements.

A third ship carrying sunflower from Argentina arrived in Bulgaria on Monday. Samples are yet to be taken. Tests on samples from the first two ships found pesticide levels above the permitted limits.
