Hundreds of people have offered to help rescue a flock of sheep that fell into a deep ravine near the village of Shiroko Pole, close to the town of Kardzhali. The animals have been surviving on a narrow rocky ledge for over a month. BNT and the Wildlife Rescue Centre of Green Balkans are organising an operation to bring the stranded sheep to safety.
On Tuesday, climbers will descend into the ravine, which is over 400 metres deep, and attempt to catch the animals and haul them to safety. While the chances of rescuing them are slim, the rescue team says it will do everything possible to help, according to BNT.
The sheep were grazing when they were chased by a dog. They fell from a great height and, despite efforts by local residents to free them, they remained trapped among the rocks, as reported by BNR's Kardzhali correspondent, Valya Apostolova.
