Ahead of World Poetry Day on 21 March, the Sts Cyril and Methodius National Library is opening an exhibition today marking the 160th anniversary of the birth of poet Pencho Slaveykov.
Entitled “Pencho Slaveykov and the National Library”, the exhibition highlights his contribution to the institution’s modernisation. One of Bulgaria’s leading modernist poets, Slaveykov worked at the library from 1899 and served as its director from 1909 to 1911.

Items from the library’s collections will be on display, including documents and photographs from the Bulgarian Historical Archive, as well as a banknote bearing the poet’s likeness, designed by Kiril Gogov.
The programme also includes a talk by scholars on Slaveykov’s life and work, followed by readings of his poetry.
The exhibition opens in the central foyer of the National Library in Sofia.
