Bulgaria’s participation in the Board of Peace and the sharp exchange of political statements on the issue do not contribute to the country’s international image and authority, President Iliana Yotova said in Pernik. According to her, domestic political disputes should not be carried onto the international stage.
Yotova said she had waited to review the full text of the National Assembly’s decision, which was published today in the State Gazette. She added that this is a complex issue, not only national but also geopolitical, which should be resolved by the next parliament and a regular government. She expects the caretaker cabinet, as it has already stated, to refer the matter to the Constitutional Court.
On March 13, parliament instructed the caretaker government to submit a draft law on ratifying Bulgaria’s accession as a founding member to the Charter of the Board of Peace, established at the initiative of U.S. President Donald Trump. Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov said that, under such a decision, the Council of Ministers would refer the matter to the Constitutional Court.
