Bozhidar Saraboyukov brought Bulgaria its first medal from the World Athletics Championships in 16 years. The Bulgarian cleared 8.31 meters in the long jump and won the country's first medal since the 2010 world championships, when Vanya Stambolova celebrated with silver in the 400 m in Doha.
The athlete whose coach is Dimitar Karamfilov started well in the hall in the
Polish city of Torun with 8.22 meters in his first attempt. In the
second, Saraboyukov made his best achievement in the competition -
8.31 m. and topped the provisional ranking. However, after two weaker
attempts and two risky jumps that ended in a foul, he took third
place.
The
gold went to Portuguese Gerson Baldé, who achieved 8.46 meters in
his last attempt. This is also the best result in the world for the
season. Mattia Furlani from Italy won the silver medal with 8.39 m.
