Bulgaria is the largest trading partner of Iran among Eastern European EU member states, BGNES reported. The country ranks 7th in the EU in terms of trade turnover with Tehran. In 2025, total trade amounted to €172 million. Only Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Spain rank ahead of Bulgaria in trade exchange.

The trade balance for last year was positive for Sofia, with exports reaching €102 million.

For the Islamic Republic, Bulgaria is not only its largest trading partner in Eastern Europe but also ranks fourth in terms of imports within the EU. In 2024, Bulgaria imported goods worth €70 million, mainly food products.

In 2025, trade between the EU and Iran fell to its lowest level due to sanctions, amounting to €3.72 billion, according to Eurostat. The Islamic Republic remains a secondary partner, accounting for just 0.1% of the EU’s exports.
