Bulgaria is among the five EU member states - alongside Belgium, Denmark, Poland, and Romania - that are on track to achieve the target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2030.
Despite this, Bulgaria and Romania, together with Croatia, continue to record the highest rates of fatalities from road traffic accidents in the European Union. This is according to preliminary data from the European Commission for 2025, as reported by BNR's Brussels correspondent Angelina Piskova.
The safest roads in the EU, with the lowest mortality rates from traffic accidents, are found in Sweden and Denmark.
