The expansion of Bulgarian language programmes abroad was addressed during a meeting at the Ministry of Education and Science, according to an announcement by the ministry. Acting Minister Sergei Ignatov met with professors of Bulgarian Studies from foreign universities to discuss plans for this 'key objective' of the government, as Mr Ignatov said.

“This team is considering how to improve your status and strengthen Bulgaria’s presence abroad,” the minister told those present. The professors raised some current issues, such as the working conditions of lecturers, including housing provision, and the creation of a library of Bulgarian films to support teaching activities.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of running summer Bulgarian language courses for foreign and ethnic Bulgarian students.

Deputy Minister Natalia Mihalevska presented some of the programmes run by the Ministry of Education and Science, including “The Untold Stories of Bulgarians”, which focuses on Bulgarian heritage abroad. She also urged the professors to develop and submit their own cultural projects related to Bulgarian studies and significant anniversaries.
