The exhibition "The Incredible History of the Bulgarian Alphabet" will open on March 31 at 4:00 p.m. at the National Library "Sts. Cyril and Methodius". It will demonstrate with impressive force and arguments the role of Bulgaria as a key creator and spreader of writing in Europe, as a contribution that changed the course of the civilizational development of the entire Slavic world.

The project traces over 1250 years of development of the Bulgarian alphabet - from its creation at the Preslav Literary School to its spreading in Eastern Europe and its transformation into the second most used written standard on the continent.

The Bulgarian alphabet is Bulgaria's most significant contribution to world culture. Its history has often been manipulated and falsified.

Today, the Bulgarian alphabet is the second most widespread alphabet in Europe. Paradoxically, it is known in the world under the name "Cyrillic" or "Slavic alphabet", which does not correspond to the historical truth. Brothers Cyril and Methodius created the Glagolitic script as a Slavic script, and the name "Cyrillic" appeared in 1563 in a Croatian translation of the New Testament.
