Sofia has taken an important step toward implementing one of its major strategic projects - the “Green Ring.” This nearly 30-kilometer green corridor will allow people to walk around the city in a single day or cycle it in about an hour and a half. According to the municipality, construction is expected to begin at the end of 2026.

The mayor of the capital, Vasil Terziev, has signed an agreement for the free transfer of 32 state-owned properties located in different districts of the city. These will be used to build the route.

Project designers highlight that the plan includes transforming abandoned spaces and former railway lines around central Sofia into a new type of urban artery. The Green Ring will connect parks across the city, link central and peripheral neighborhoods, and provide access to numerous sports and cultural facilities.

The idea for the project first emerged in 2018 as a civic initiative, later supported by the municipality. Its initiators are architects Hristiyana Vasileva and Svetoslav Aleksandrov.
