Bulgaria has firmly opposed Iran's attacks on Gulf states and called for Tehran to restore free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the Foreign Ministry has announced.

Petko Doykov, Director General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made this statement during a conversation with Alireza Irvash, Iran's Ambassador to Sofia.

For his part, the Iranian ambassador once again asked what the purpose of the US aircraft stationed at Sofia's Vasil Levski Airport is.

Mr Doykov reassured him that Bulgaria is not participating in the war and that the aircraft are not being used for combat operations. He also stated that no combat aircraft involved in military operations are flying over or refuelling in Bulgaria.

Both sides expressed a desire to maintain open lines of communication going forward, the Foreign Ministry announced.
