Five municipalities welcome 50% of tourists in Bulgaria

With nearly 1.5 million visitors, Nessebar was the most tourist-active municipality in 2025. For the same year, Sofia attracted 1.3 million tourists, Varna – 1.2 million, Plovdiv – 410,000 and Balchik – 378,000. The leading five municipalities form exactly 50% of the tourist flow in the country. This is according to an analysis by the Institute for Market Economics. The top ten is completed by Velingrad, Bansko, Burgas, Hisarya and Samokov.

Revenues from accommodation facilities reach 1.4 billion euros in 2025, with Nessebar, Varna and Sofia alone forming over half of all overnight stays. Nessebar is also the leader in terms of the share of foreign tourists with 76%, followed by Varna and Kavarna with 70% each.
