The Supreme Court of Cassation has initiated an interpretative case in search of an answer to the question whether Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov has the authority to request the reopening of criminal cases after July 21, 2025.

This is the date on which the six-month limitation period for occupying the position of "temporarily acting" Prosecutor General expired. The case comes a day after the Constitutional Court ruled that the setting of the six-month limitation period is not unconstitutional.

Sarafov has been Acting Prosecutor General since June 16, 2023, after Ivan Geshev was removed from office.
