Workplace fatalities are rising, data from the National Social Security Institute show

Bulgaria reports 2,826 workplace accidents in 2025

A total of 3,117 workplace incidents were recorded last year, the National Social Security Institute said. Of these, 2,826 were recognised as occupational accidents: 2,356 occurred at work, and 470 occurred while travelling to or from work.

Seventy-six people lost their lives while at work. The total number of calendar days lost due to workplace accidents for the entire year was 144,008.

The highest number of workplace accidents was recorded in major cities: in Sofia nearly 39%, in Plovdiv 10.39%, and in Varna 6.67%. The sectors with the most incidents were “Manufacturing”, “Trade”, “Transportation, Warehousing, and Postal Services”, and “Construction”.

Compared to the previous year, the number of fatal workplace accidents increased by twelve.
