With three days to go before the early parliamentary elections, the government says its main priority remains ensuring a fair vote. Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov warned that there is no greater threat to a country than what he called the “trade in democracy”, speaking at the start of a cabinet meeting.

He added that this is not the only area where people are being exploited for profit.
“There is another, quieter and less visible one — the trade in healthcare. In one case, votes are bought to secure mandates; in the other, weaknesses in the system are used to fill party coffers, with ordinary citizens once again paying the price,” he said.

Police operations against vote-buying continued today, with several arrests reported.
