In his first statement following the early parliamentary election, Boyko Borisov acknowledged GERB’s poor result and said the party would act as a “constructive opposition” in the new parliament.
GERB recorded its lowest-ever turnout. Despite the setback, Borissov congratulated President Rumen Radev on the victory of “Progressive Bulgaria.” “Radev now faces a one-man government, while there is no question of the GERB leader resigning,” Borissov said.
He admitted that cooperation with the DPS and Delyan Peevski, as well as what he described as a shift to the left, had cost the party significant public support.
According to Borissov, GERB lost around 100,000 votes because of its “friendship” with DPS, and another 100,000 due to its alliance with PP-DB.
“The party will no longer make concessions or join unprincipled coalitions,” he said, signalling a return to its anti-corruption, centre-right identity.
Borissov also pointed to what he described as key achievements, including Bulgaria’s full membership in Schengen and the eurozone.
