Acting prosecutor general Borislav Sarafov has resigned, effective April 22, after three years in the role.

Judicial authorities had until now declined to replace him, arguing he was already in post and not affected by the new rules adopted by parliament. His continued stay in office triggered regular protests by political parties and non-governmental organisations.

Sarafov will return to his previous roles as deputy prosecutor general and head of the National Investigation Service.

The Prosecutors’ College of the Supreme Judicial Council appointed Vanya Stefanova as acting prosecutor general for the next six months, replacing him. The decision was taken unanimously and without debate, and can be appealed within 14 days.

Stefanova has been serving as a deputy prosecutor general, a post she took up on Sarafov’s recommendation.
