Sarafov resignation a necessary first step, president says

“This is a necessary step, but only a first one,” President Iliana Iotova said, commenting on the resignation of Borislav Sarafov as acting prosecutor general.

“Sarafov should have stepped down long ago and unblocked the process,” she told reporters ahead of the European Broadcasting Union’s Media Summit in Sofia, as quoted by BTA.

Ms. Iotova said she hoped broad consensus would help resolve expired mandates and allow for the transparent election of a new Supreme Judicial Council with enough authority to ensure the integrity of procedures going forward.

“This is the job and responsibility of politicians, and we, as citizens, want justice that ensures fairness,” she added.
