More than 300 workers will be laid off at the AES Maritza East 1 coal-fired power plant in Galabovo, the local labour office said.

Authorities have been notified of the planned mass layoffs at the plant, which is expected to halt operations in May when its long-term power purchase agreement with the National Electricity Company expires.

The contract, which guaranteed the plant’s revenues through fixed electricity prices, underpinned its operations.

'Procedures for the mass layoffs have been arranged so that those affected receive support with registration and follow-up services,' said Georgi Gyokov, head of the labour office in Stara Zagora.

Last year, ContourGlobal Maritza East 3 also ceased operations after its long-term contract expired.
