Delegates at the general assembly of the International Association “European Cultural Route of Cyril and Methodius” have unanimously approved the applications of the municipalities of Plovdiv and Burgas to join the cultural route.

Radio Plovdiv reported that the meeting took place in April 2026 in Aquileia, northern Italy, a site with a millennia-old history and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage location.

In the ninth century, envoys of Prince Boris I passed through Aquileia on their way to meet the Pope in Rome, and their names are recorded in the famous Cividale Gospel.

The European Cultural Route of Cyril and Methodius, certified in 2021 by the Council of Europe, is now one of 48 cultural routes under its programme. Spanning 10 countries, it highlights the significance of the Cyrillo-Methodian literary, religious, and cultural tradition in European history.
