It was only a matter of time before percussionist and composer Kalin Veliov and Cuban pianist and singer Ire Vázquez recorded a song together. Both have long been an essential part of the local Latin music scene, which continues to expand. Ire has been in Bulgaria for over 20 years, and during that time her professional path has crossed with Kalin’s on many occasions, but only now are they presenting their first joint song, “Cha Cha”. Kalin created the music in the respective style, as well as the Bulgarian lyrics, while Ire adds rhymes in Spanish. They are joined by the musicians from their project “Ire & Los Papis,” featuring some of Bulgaria’s top contemporary performers, many of whom have a strong background in Latin music.

The video reveals another talent of Kalin Veliov, who takes on the role of director. It includes footage from an event remembered as one of the biggest salsa parties in Sofia over the past year, featuring “Ire & Los Papis”. Dillian Davidkov’s trumpet draws vivid lines, Dimitar Stoev’s trombone adds depth and character, Martin Velev’s bass keeps the pulse, and Hristo Ganev’s congas bring the fire of the Caribbean.
Thus, “Ire@Kalin Cha Cha” takes on its final form, telling us—with the ease typical of the Latin genre—about urban life and the desire to escape from it with a “dog, a cat, a trumpet and a moped.”
